AVIATION AND INNOVATION

What if I tell you that your next flight might be in a plane that would be windowless? And you wouldn't be having that cloud sightseeing. Well! A big change is being expected in the aviation world by The Center for Process Innovation, a British technology research company. Why and how? You'll get the answers when you read more.

WINDOWLESS PLANES

WINDOWLESS PLANES

The process innovation company has put forward an idea of making planes windowless. They are planning to instead replace the windows with OLED touch-screens that extend along the plane’s entire length and display the view from outside through cameras mounted on the plane’s exterior. How do you think an experience in such a plane would be like?

WHY SUCH AND IDEA?

WHY SUCH AND IDEA?

This revolutionary idea in the world of aviation was first put forward by a Paris based design company. This idea was then taken into consideration by The Centre For Process Innovation, as they found this idea highly economical and better. Though this idea sounds nothing more than a nightmare, it is not that scary as it looks in your imagination. Replacing windows with OLED screens will give you a much better view of the clouds and the birds and believe me, the idea is a great one.

WHAT ARE OLED SCREENS AND WHY ONLY THEM?

WHAT ARE OLED SCREENS AND WHY ONLY THEM?

OLED screens are actually organic light-emitting diode (OLED), which is a compound that gives out light in response to an electric current. OLED is taken into consideration as an alternative to the windows because they do not need a back light, meaning that they use less energy and are comparatively thinner than other displays. Replacing windows is related to economic issues as no windows would cut down the weight of the plane which would need less fuel to fly and flights could get cheaper. According to the company—the Center for Process Innovation (CPI)—for every 1% reduction in weight, there’s approximately a 0.75% in fuel savings. Furthermore, the environment would benefit from the accompanying reduction in CO2 emissions.

IDEA IN MAKING

IDEA IN MAKING

Though the idea sounds literally great, the alternative for windows, that is the OLED are actually expensive, very expensive. The CPI is doing its best to cut down the OLED's manufacturing cost to make it cheaper. They are trying to make it flexible. “We can make transistors that are flexible, but if we can make OLEDs that are flexible, that gives us a lot of potential in the market because we can print OLEDs on to packaging,” said CPI’s Dr. Jon Helliwell. But the futuristic technology doesn’t end there; the images displayed would also change in accordance with the passenger’s head movements.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

So, if this innovative idea becomes a reality, there would be a huge change in the world of aviation. Less expense on flight travelling, more bigger planes which means more space for legs and then that amazing view as the cameras would be provide unobstructed 360-degree views of the world zooming past. Passengers would even reportedly be able to set their screen to show a live stream of a different portion of the plane. Look at the video. https://youtu.be/HvYsHOzWUY8
